About 5.72 crore accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) had zero balance, while around one in four accounts was classified as inoperative, according to data obtained through an RTI application.
As of August 12, 2026, there were 59,03,74,907 PMJDY accounts across the country, with a total balance of Rs 3,15,179.90 crore, the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Financial Services said in response to an RTI application filed by activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur.
Of the total accounts, 15,36,77,009 were classified as inoperative, while 5,72,35,490 had no balance.
Women, including transgender account holders, held 32.89 crore of the total PMJDY accounts, while men held 26.14 crore.
Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of zero-balance PMJDY accounts at 95.92 lakh, followed by Bihar with 62.35 lakh, West Bengal with 37.20 lakh, Assam with 36.30 lakh and Maharashtra with 36.04 lakh.
Uttar Pradesh also topped the list in terms of inoperative accounts, with 3.23 crore, followed by Bihar with 1.59 crore, Madhya Pradesh with 1.35 crore, West Bengal with 1.02 crore and Maharashtra with 97.94 lakh.
The state-wise data showed that Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of PMJDY accounts at 10.51 crore, followed by Bihar with 7.01 crore, West Bengal with 5.73 crore, Rajasthan with 3.87 crore and Maharashtra with 3.85 crore.
The PMJDY was launched in August 2014 as the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, with the objective of providing universal access to banking services, including at least one basic bank account for every household, along with financial literacy and social security coverage.
The RTI reply, dated September 1, said the Centre did not centrally maintain gender-wise data on PMJDY account balances, zero-balance accounts and inoperative accounts.
It also said data was not maintained centrally on accounts with balances below Rs 100, accounts closed during the previous five years, or accounts barred or frozen because of suspicious transactions or cyber fraud.
The RTI response provided state-wise data for 36 states and Union territories.
