When asked about his motivation behind the book, LaMar stated the following, “When I was in the system, it felt like we would get lost in the years to follow– but once I realized what I had to do, there was no stopping me. I ended up getting a job and enrolled in high school vocational training to avoid extensive homework. What I learned in those classes was something I still carry with me. When I sat down to write this book, my only purpose was to share this experience so others like me could benefit from the same!”

Robert W. Lamar was only three years old when he found out his father had been killed in a tragic accident, and his mother didn’t have the right to raise them on her own. He and his brother spent the early years of their life in a children’s homes and occasional visits from their mother.

The latter half of their life involved them finding work and tending to themselves. Amidst all this chaos, LaMar found his passion and love for architecture.
