The Center A – Place of Hope reviews the difference between anxiety and depression

Edmonds, WA, 16th Feb 2022, ZEXPRWIRE, According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting 40 million adults in the U.S. each year.  Depression is also a prevalent mental health issue, with an estimated 16.1 million people in the U.S. experiencing at least one major depressive episode in a given year. It can be challenging to tell the difference between anxiety and depression, so The Center A Place of Hope has put together a review of both conditions to help individuals understand what they are dealing with.

According to The Center • A Place of HOPE, anxiety and depression are two different mental health conditions. While both can cause negative feelings and impede daily life activities, they are caused by other things and require different treatments.  Anxiety is often caused by events or situations that are perceived as threatening. At the same time, depression is a more long-term condition that may be triggered by difficult life circumstances or genetics. Depression is characterized by feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness, while people with anxiety may experience excessive worry, fearfulness, or unease.

We all experience feelings of anxiety at some point in our lives. Anxiety disorders, however, are characterized by these feelings that persist for more than a couple of weeks and can include excessive worry or fear and an aversion to certain things such as going out. There is also generalized anxiety that does not have to be triggered and can make people feel anxious over things they would not typically worry about.

Common symptoms of an anxiety disorder include unfounded and uncontrollable worry, fear, irritability, difficulty concentrating, problems sleeping, and muscle tension. Panic attacks are also common anxiety symptoms where one experiences sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, chest pain, a fast heartbeat, among other symptoms. The common risk factors for developing Anxiety disorders are gender, with women being more predisposed to anxiety than men. Family history of anxiety, trauma, and other mental health disorders.

According to The Center • A Place of HOPE, there are several disorders classified under anxiety disorders, and they include Generalized anxiety disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). A professional can diagnose these disorders through a series of psychological evaluations. They can also be treated using antidepressants for anxiety episodes. Cognitive and behavioral therapy is also employed to aid with coping mechanisms for anxiety symptoms.

Depression/Depressive Disorders are characterized by feelings of depression lasting up to and beyond two weeks. Other symptoms include sadness, lack of motivation, changes in sleep patterns( insomnia or hypersomnia), and suicidal ideation, among others. There are several types of depressive disorders including, Major Depressive Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Seasonal Affective Disorder.
